The evidence behind recognized Developmental Career Theories supports the idea that individuals should engage in a wide range of activities that help them identify and think about their strengths, interest and values. Individuals benefit from repeated exercises of inventories, surveys, journaling, and the discussing of their aspirations as an important element of career learning. Our Develop Identity activities systematically help individuals develop a sense of self for their present and future.
Social capital and self-efficacy emerge from a wide range of individuals' experiences. Projects, collaboration, simulations, embedded work experiences, and interactions with role models help individuals expand the context and understanding of the world of work. Who out there is doing specific kinds of work? What are the options?
Expand Experience activities provide opportunities for individuals to engage in “real world” experiences, find people to help guide them, and explore which environments are ideal.
Individuals need to be exposed to a wide range of opportunities, and get help accessing these opportunities. They need to explore career paths available in high school and beyond, investigate different kinds of career sectors, and become ready for various present and future opportunities. For an individual to feel empowered in seeing options and navigating their path, they must have a way to organize and categorize work preferences/styles and sectors of work.
Students need to think about their future, set appropriate goals, and reflect on their accomplishments . They will develop the tools and mindset to adjust to new contexts, adopt new strategies, and refine goals. Students develop their future narratives and learn how to prepare for their future today.
